Best Decking Material for New Jersey Weather
Last updated June 2026 · NJ Premium Builders
For most New Jersey homeowners, capped composite (Trex, TimberTech) or PVC (AZEK) is the best decking material — it shrugs off NJ's freeze-thaw winters and humid summers with almost no maintenance. Pressure-treated wood costs least up front but needs sealing every 2–3 years.
Decking materials at a glance
Here's how the four common decking materials compare for a New Jersey climate — on up-front cost, upkeep and how long they last.
| Material | Up-front cost | Maintenance | Lifespan | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pressure-treated | $ | Seal every 2–3 yrs | 10–15 yrs | Tight budgets |
| Cedar | $ | Seal every 1–2 yrs | 15–20 yrs | Natural look |
| Composite (Trex/TimberTech) | $$ | Soap & water | 25–30+ yrs | Low-maintenance value |
| PVC (AZEK) | $$ | Soap & water | 30–50 yrs | Max durability & sun/pool |

How NJ weather affects your deck
New Jersey's freeze-thaw cycles, humidity and strong summer sun are hard on decks. Water that soaks into wood expands when it freezes, opening cracks; humidity feeds mold; and UV fades unsealed surfaces.
Capped composite and PVC don't absorb water, so they resist the freeze-thaw cracking and mildew that age wood decks early here. They also need a footing system built below the frost line — see our NJ deck permit & code guide.
Composite vs. PVC
Composite (Trex, TimberTech PRO) is a wood-plastic blend — textured, durable and the best balance of cost and performance for most homeowners. PVC (TimberTech AZEK) is all-polymer — lighter, the most fade- and moisture-resistant, and runs cooler in lighter colors, which makes it ideal for pool decks and full sun.
Cedar & pressure-treated wood
Real wood is beautiful and cheaper up front. Cedar resists rot naturally; pressure-treated pine is the budget choice. Both need cleaning and re-sealing every 1–3 years in NJ's climate to prevent graying, cracking and rot — plan for that upkeep before choosing wood.
Our recommendation for NJ
For most Bergen County homes we recommend capped composite for the best value, PVC for pools and full-sun decks, and cedar or pressure-treated when budget or a natural look comes first.
